Apologies for Alex
I feel bad about my last blog entry but I'll leave it there for everyone to see.
I dislike what is not constructive. I attacked a community member, and under no circumstances is that constructive.
Alex raises good points, and although I think bypassing the mirrors is not a good idea for various reasons, it's not right to start flaming another person.
Alex, I humbly apologize for my previous entry.
Denis

This isn't the first time. You seem to have a bad habit of becoming very defensive and angry when people offer any advice or suggestions or sometimes, even just have an opinion on the eclipse servers. I could understand if you were reacting to someone being rude to you or deliberately vindictive, but often, that's not the case. I seriously think you need to do something about your attitude/temper.
Denis,
Thanks, apology accepted. I too thought about a flaming response, but often have found that leaving it a while is the best way of divorcing the emotion from the issues. But I know what it's like :-)
I agree that a direct download link shouldn't be promoted. When I posted about 3.2M6 being out, I put the link to the main page (and similarly on the EclipseZone post). I waited a few days for people to have already obtained it before posting my blog entry. What I wanted to do is show that there's no reason such a download link could be possible, and to raise the bug's visibility so that others could comment/vote on it (and it seems a few have voted, though not for the HTTP/FTP mirror one).
I also know that a 10-minute change is never a 10-minute change in the end :-) But I don't think it would take that long to get together and test (couple of days?) although fitting it in with the release schedule of 3.2 might be an issue (particularly if they insist on wanting the click-through text which really sods the idea up).
I think that the idea was building up steam for a while, and I never really knew whether you (or I) should have raised a bug about it before; so that's why I raised them recently, to make sure that it didn't slip through the cracks again. I'm also pretty sure that I didn't say that the download pages sucked; if I did, I'm sorry for that too.
In any case, my goal (with both bugs) was to try and solve headaches that stops me from using mirrors (with the result that I always go back to Eclipse.org). I know it's not good for the foundation's bandwith, and believe me, I'd like to use the mirrors locally; but if I don't know if it's an HTTP or FTP one from the download page (or update manager), it's easier for me to go to Eclipse.org. It also stops double-counting; I've caused a couple of double-counts by picking a mirror, realising it was an FTP one, and going back to Eclipse.org and thus appearing as 2 downloads instead of one.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: you have an unenviable job of trying to keep the whole world happy, and in some cases being (the purple tinted) face of Eclipse.org. Despite all that, you do a good job. And if you can find time to fix both of these issues, I'll gladly stop using Eclipse.org and settle down with a nice local mirror somewhere.
No hard feelings. Next EclipseCon, I'll even let you buy me a beer. And if you fix both of those bugs, I'll buy you one :-)
Golly, you're right. I often tend to take these things personally, and I shouldn't. If I had infinite time/budget, I could make the whole gig perfect for everyone. I need to accept the fact that it's not possible.
Or perhaps this blogging thing just isn't for me ;)
Alex, I understand your position. There's plenty of work piled up (in my Inbox, in bugzilla) so I can't tend to every 10-minute request right away - that's why a bug helps gather support from the community so I can prioritize it.
I'm glad you're being a good sport about this. Thanks for understanding.
